Beyond
the Earth

  • Welcome to Beyond the Earth, a free and non-profit educational Web site about space exploration.

  • This Web site is for the purpose of educating and inspiring the children of the Cayman Islands.

  • To explore the site click the various links on the left side of this page.

  • Imagine reading an eyewitness account of the first human migration beyond the African continent.

Consider the overwhelming power of photographs taken the moment the first Asians set foot in the New World thousands of years ago.

What would it feel like to watch video of Vikings wading ashore in North America centuries ago?

While these fantasies can never be, there is, however, one such event that we can know in great detail.

The latter half of the 20th century will be remembered thousands of years from now as the time when humans first crept beyond the Earth. Achieving a foothold in space and landing humans on the Moon was something more than a fancy technological feat.

In doing these things we forever changed ideas about human ability and potential.

The irony is that these first steps into the universe around us were largely motivated by nationalism, a competition between two superpowers. Today, however, the winds have shifted toward increasing international cooperation. Space exploration has matured from a contest that encouraged division to an exciting frontier that offers the promise of greater unity for our species.

This website is a small attempt to honor and draw attention to our first stabs into the darkness above. This site is loaded with powerful photos, interesting articles and enlightening diagrams of Apollo vehicles. My interviews with astronauts and other key figures provide a personal feel to the exploration of space.

Thank you for visiting. Now get busy and start clicking those links on the upper-left side of this page. Look, learn and enjoy!
